I Actually Do Hate Debate!

The "argument" I encounter all the time from so-called debate "coaches" is that I hate debate.

I do! And it's because of this ridiculous statement. In this episode I explain why I hate debate by reviewing the history of the debate tournament in the United States and how it has become anti-intellectual and a bankrupt pedagogy.

The National Debate Tournament and Cliffside Pedagogy

https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/inthebin/episodes/The-National-Debate-Tournament-and-Cliffside-Pedagogy-e3152u5

In this episode I talk about the National Debate Tournament - who is it for? Why is it being more and more crowdfunded? And what can it do to futureproof itself?

Cliffside pedagogy is a rhetorical pedagogy that says that your work is done when you point out, or allow your opponent in an argument or debate to fall over, trip, or make a mistake.

This pedagogy isn't effective for engagement in larger debates than something monastic, like the NDT. It also doesn't allow the full power of debate to come out of your practice.
